Project Overview :

Once the jewel in the crown of the Great Central Railway, Leicester’s Great Central Station has been vacant for nearly 50 years. It is now being restored as part of a £50 million regeneration of the waterside area. The arches are set to be converted into shops and will be a significant addition to Leicester’s large scale pedestrianisation plans.

We first started working on the restoration of the site in March 2018, the first phase focusing on cleaning, restoring and repairing the main Great Central Street façade along with the traditional internal arrival areas, pebbles, paving, traditional passenger walkways and storage areas.

Before starting the restoration, we conducted detailed test trials on the North elevation of the main arrival room, ensuring that the areas tested were representative of the challenges across the whole site.  The façade cleaning test trials and investigations took place over a 2 day period, enabling our team to put forward an honest, well considered and cost effective building cleaning and restoration programme that identified the variation of cleaning methods, products, dwell times, programmes, challenges required to clean and restore this historic monument as a gateway into the city once again.
